Conference Opportunities

for Affinity Group Members

Diversity in medicine and affinity group conferences in medical school are crucial because they foster an inclusive environment that reflects the diverse patient population doctors will serve. By bringing together students, educators, and professionals from various backgrounds, these conferences provide unique opportunities for networking, mentorship, and learning about different cultural competencies and healthcare disparities. They encourage the exchange of diverse perspectives and innovative ideas, which is essential for addressing complex health issues and promoting equity in healthcare delivery. Through these gatherings, future healthcare professionals are better prepared to meet the needs of all patients, enhancing the quality of care and contributing to the overall improvement of health outcomes.

AMEC

The largest gathering of underrepresented minority medical and premedical students across the United States and the Caribbean, the Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) gives attendees several days of innovative programming geared at preparing the next generation of physicians for successful careers in medicine. With tens of educational workshops and programs focused on academic and clinical success, professional development, and personal growth, AMEC is a premier experience that catapults attendees toward becoming “clinically excellent, culturally competent, & socially conscious” physicians. Attendees will also enjoy the unique opportunity to network with colleagues, physicians, medical school/residency program representatives, and partners from all over the country.

National Leadership Institute

The National Leadership Institute (NLI) is held three times per year in conjunction with the Board of Directors Meetings. SNMA and MAPS members from all parts of the country gather for a weekend of educational workshops on leadership training, organizational advancement and project development. During each session, educational tracks are crafted specifically for board members, regional and chapter members at large, and for pre-medical students.

APAMSA’s Conferences

National

Regional

Ohio State is in Region V of APAMSA (Midwest Region). They host an annual conference in our district.

In recent years, APAMSA National Conference themes have centered around boldly imagining the future and thoughtfully examining the past in order to bring our community together around the common goal of addressing healthcare disparities.

Hepatitis

Each year, we strive to collectively engage in the global fight against liver diseases, including hepatitis B and C, and to raise awareness about health disparities and their impact within the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population.

The objectives of the conference are to raise awareness about the impact of liver diseases on the AANHPI community, to encourage future health care providers to advocate for policy changes to address the current health disparities that the AANHPI community face, to provide opportunities for current health profession students to network with prominent leaders in hepatology and to provide a venue for students to present their research on topics related to GI/hepatology.
